WATCH: Thousands Told To Evacuate Ahead Of Volcanic Eruption In Philippines

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines - (UPDATE - 11:50 a.m.) The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is closely monitoring the behavior of Mayon Volcano after it spewed ash in a phreatic eruption during heavy rains Saturday afternoon.

A second ash eruption was recorded this morning, but Phivolcs has not yet raised the alert level any further.

Phivolcs said: "For the past 24 hours, Mayon Volcano in Albay province has noticeably increased its unrest".

And just a few hours later, the threat was raised again from two to three as Phivolcs warned of "hazardous eruption" within weeks or days as Mayon Volcano has exhibited "high unrest" and its magma is at the crater. The institute advised people near ashfall to cover their noses and mouths with a damp, clean cloth or dust mask.

Disaster-response officials said almost 1,000 families have been moved to emergency shelters, including some from a permanent danger zone around Mayon, since the volcano started spewing steam and ash on Saturday.

Mayon's most destructive eruption occurred in February, 1841 where lava flows buried a town leaving 1,200 people dead.

The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the six (6) kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) to minimize risks from sudden explosions, rockfall and landslides.

Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office head Cedric Daep announced the barangays in the towns of Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Malilipot, Tabaco City, and Ligao City.

It also asked civil aviation authorities to advise pilots from flying close to the volcano's summit, "as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft".

People within the slope of the volcano, but outside the danger zones, were told to take precautionary measures against possible roof collapses due to accumulated ash and rainwater, and lahar, an Indonesian term for a volcanic mudflow.

Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum said the volcano appeared due for another major eruption as it has been displaying abnormal behaviour since late previous year.

"We call on the people directly affected by the eruption of Mt Mayon to cooperate with their respective LGUs (local government units) in order for us to avoid injuries or casualties", Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said.
