An Early….and Tough….Flu Season in Beatrice Area

Monroe County reports first flu death of season

A 4-year-old boy has died from the flu, the Ohio Department of Health has confirmed.

The 2017-18 flu season in OH and nationally is looking similar to the 2014-15 flu season, which at the time was the most severe flu season in recent years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Up until December 30, 2017, there were 11,275 laboratory-confirmed cases across the country, 74 per cent of which are attributed to influenza A. There have been a total of 1,050 influenza-related hospitalizations and 34 deaths across the country. There have been 3,854 total flu-associated hospitalizations in OH since flu season began in October.

Wischmeier suspects early holiday gatherings of people may have been one factor in the spread of the flu.

On Jan. 2, Riverwood posted hospital visitor restrictions and encourages local residents not to visit hospitalized patients if they have flu-like symptoms of a fever, cough or sore throat, vomiting or diarrhea; a sick family member; or have recently been in contact with someone with flu-like symptoms. Even with the flu vaccine, he says people are still getting sick. H3N2-dominant flu seasons are associated with more severe illness, especially among children and older adults.

"Normally in a season, we'll see a peak of influenza A happening some time towards the end of December or through January", Murti said Monday.

Each year the formula for the vaccine is developed based on last year's flu virus. It's true that the vaccine was only 10 per cent effective in preventing influenza A.

These well intentioned gestures of good cheer coupled with children returning to school create the flawless storm scenario for spreading the flu even further.

The CDC advises people 6 months and older get vaccinated.

Carolyn Kaltenberg said flu symptoms can appear similar to the common cold, but they are differentiated by a running temperature, body aches and fatigue.

According to US officials, the flu vaccine is still the best way to safeguard your immune system against influenza.

A toddler in Lucas County has died from complications of the flu this week, becoming the second child to die from pediatric flu this season.
