Man cuts hijab off girl walking to school in Scarborough

Toronto police said the girl was on her way to Pauline Johnson Junior Public School at 35 Dunmurray Blvd., near Warden Avenue and Huntingwood Drive, when a man with scissors assaulted her and cut off her hijab shortly before 9 a.m. January 12.

"I felt really scared and confused", she told reporters Friday afternoon, recounting the traumatic incident in a Scarborough neighbourhood near Birchmount Rd. and Sheppard Ave. E.

She is a student at Pauline Johnson Junior Public School.

Constable Jenifferjit Sidhu told a press conference that Noman had turned and confronted her assailant, making loud noises to scare him off and then she ran away with her little brother in tow.

Akin to a familiar theme before and after the 2016 United States presidential election, an 11-year-old female Toronto grammar school student is claiming a man attempted to cut off her hijab while she was on her way to school this morning. Police say he is Asian, 20 to 30 years old, about five-foot-seven to five-foot-eight with a thin build, black hair with straight bangs down to his eyebrows and a thin moustache. "I can't imagine how afraid she must have been", Trudeau said. "I am so proud to be a Canadian, and I feel so safe in this community".

Khawlah said she and her brother "followed this crowd of people to be safe".

A Canadian 11-year-old has told police a man cut her hijab with scissors while she was on her way to school, as the country continues to tackle growing anti-Muslim sentiment.

"I saw my sister and she was frightened and I was more frightened because I didn't know if she was injured or if he was going to hurt her", Mohammad Zakariya said.

Afterward, according to Sidhu, the girl noticed a 12-inch cut from the bottom up on the back of her hijab. "I don't know why he did that, but it's just not Canada". "This does not represent who we are. You should not act like this". Police say they are treating the attack as a hate crime. Terrified, she turned to face him - a young Asian male, roughly 5-foot-8 to six feet tall, wearing black trousers, a black hoodie and brown gloves.

"No child should ever be afraid walking to school in Toronto because of what they are wearing or for any other reason and I want to assure the family that Toronto Police are investigating".

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked about the attack during a speech wrapping up a two-day cabinet retreat in London, Ont., on Friday afternoon.

The man is said to be in his mid-20s, and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black trousers. Anyone who can help with further information should contact Toronto Police or Crime Stoppers.

"My heart goes out to the young girl who was attacked, seemingly for her religion".
