A House GOP lawmaker who has positioned himself as a centrist on immigration issues has unveiled legislation to grant permanent legal residency to certain immigrants from El Salvador and other countries who had been given temporary protected status.

The end of TPS is also going to separate families.

Earlier this week, the Trump administration announced an end to TPS for more than 200,000 Salvadorans who have been living in the United States legally since 2001, when a major quake affected El Salvador.

The Trump administration is ending special protections for Salvadoran immigrants, forcing almost 200,000 to leave the country or face deportation, officials said Monday.

Trump administration changes to the TPS program mean that, over the next two years, about 250,000 people who previously had permission to live and work in the United States will be subject to deportation if they remain.

Letter: Congress must act to protect immigrant families

Salvadorans became eligible for the temporary status after a series of earthquakes in 2001. The country has one of the world's highest homicide rates as a result of gang violence. This week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced those protections will end in September 2019, and in the meantime, Salvadorans in the U.S. will have to re-register for TPS.

In his call to eliminate TPS altogether, Coffman's bill addresses a major criticism of the program.

"Getting them to a permanent solution is a much better plan than having them live six months to 12 months to 18 months", she told the AP. "This program was a really bad idea from the start and is completely unrealistic in thinking that, once here, they would be willing to return to their home countries where conditions may have improved but are still nowhere near the living conditions here in the United States", Coffman said. My uncle has been here under TPS for more than 10 years. Qualified enrollees could apply for permanent legal residency before the end of the three-year period and undergo a background check.

A few months back, TPS ended for Haitians in the USA, sending many across the Canadian border. Among those, is a man who spent almost three decades in the US and who is left wondering what will become of his life in the months to come. Trump said in September that he was ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, but gave Congress until March to act. At issue is the policy known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS.
