CES 2018: Western Digital Announces Two Rugged Portable SSDs

SanDisk's newest flash drive is the smallest to feature 1TB of storage

SanDisk's new flash drive is not the device with maximum storage in flash drives, this title has already taken by Kingston Data Traveler by introducing 2TB Flash drive previous year.

During the CES 2018 trade show, SanDisk arrived with a prototype of what's supposed to be the world's smallest 1TB Type-C USB flash drive. This would be on top of most PCs that the prototype flash drive can easily be connected with.

The new 256GB SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive, a low-profile USB drive for people who want to add more photos, videos, games and audio files to their notebooks, tablets, TVs, gaming consoles and vehicle audio systems.

However, so much for all the benefits that the prototype flash drive stands for at the moment, SanDisk is yet to confirm a definite launch schedule for the prototype flash drive. This 1TB flash drive is still in prototype stage, but you can expect it to ship by end of this year or early 2019. But Sandisk has taken the lead by making a far smaller USB-C drive than Kingston's flabby flash drive.

This is perhaps the most talked about device from Sandisk's stables at this year's CES. SanDisk is the third largest manufacturer of flash drives in the world. The particular flash drive also comes in different storage capacities.

The new Extreme Portable SSD comes with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 bridge, enabling read speeds of up to 550 MBps. The drive is available in 256GB, 128GB, 64GB, 32GB and 16GB storage capacities.

The WD My Passport Wireless SSD comes with a price tag of $230 for the 250GB model and $800 for the 2TB model. One distinction that's worth pointing out is that the drive is branded under WD, and not SanDisk.

Western Digital also talked about some new features in the firmware update for the My Cloud Home devices and the associated My Cloud app. These are aimed for photographers and drone enthusiasts.
