Bryant and the Cubs avoided arbitration by settling Friday on a $10.85 million salary for 2018. He walked 95 times in 2017 after never eclipsing 80 in a season and struck out just 128 times compared to 353 combined over his first two seasons.

Russell, who received a $2.65 million signing bonus from Oakland in 2012 and was traded to the Cubs in 2014, made $644,000 last season and $527,000 in 2016. He ranked third in WAR in 2016 and 16th last season. Players hold little power over their pay in their first three seasons - often making little more than the league minimum - but earn the right to file for arbitration in years four through six should they feel they've earned greater pay based on past performance. Throughout his three seasons in the league, Bryant has hit.288 with 94 home runs.

Cubs and 3B Kris Bryant avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $10.85 million contract.

Eligible for arbitration under Super 2 rules, Bryant missed the All-Star Game for the first time, saw his homer numbers fall from 39 to 29 even as his OPS rose from.939 to.946 and his RBI total drop from 102 to 73.

Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, Houston pitcher Dallas Keuchel and newly acquired St. Louis outfielder Marcell Ozuna also are among the stars set to swap.

The Cubs and reliever Justin Grimm didn't reach an agreement yet and are expected to exchange salary figures soon.

For players and teams who fail to reach agreements, hearings will be scheduled for January 29-Feb.

Teams won eight of 15 decisions last winter, the most hearings since clubs went 10-6 in 2004.
