Del Potro, Bautista Agut to meet in ASB Classic final

Argentina's del Potro, who beat Querrey to win the 2009 ASB Classic, needed only an hour to beat Shapovalov 6-2, 6-4.

Del Potro and Ferrer's rallies were generally shorter as they slugged it out from the baseline.

That was to be the last blip of the match for the Argentine, though, as he comfortably served out the first set and required just a single break in the second, saving five break points en route to victory.

Like the dynamic Ferrer, del Potro also managed to keep himself in the hunt, saving six break points and frustrating the Spaniard with his staying power.

In the other semi, Roberto Bautista Agut plays Robin Haase.

The two tour veterans last played in 2016, when del Potro knocked Ferrer out of the US Open in straight sets, and previously at Wimbledon in 2013.

"I have to play very aggressive to find his backhand - he has a very good serve and incredible forehand, and (if) he takes the initiative, I won't have a chance".

Bautista Agut broke Haase in the seventh game of the second set but Haase immediately broke back and the set again went to a tiebreak.

"I tried to serve hard to hit hard with my forehand, to play some slices and drop shots, it's never easy against David because he runs a lot and he's a fighter".

"I knew he would fight until the end".

But he'd look to recover quickly for a tilt at the final.

Speaking on court afterwards, Del Potro, who won the title in Auckland in 2009, said: "I'm exhausted, I'm so glad to be in the final after 10 [nine] years".

Isner's powerful serve wasn't enough to save him in his match with Chung, the victor of last year's ATP Next Generation finals.

"I'm very focused to reach the final here".

In the doubles, Belarusian Max Mirnyi and Austrian Philipp Oswald will take on Austrian Oliver Marach and Croatian Mate Pavic.
