Cohen also filed a second defamation lawsuit against BuzzFeed, its editor-in-chief Ben Smith, and three writers for publishing the Trump dossier in January 2017, even though the liberal website admitted in its story that "the allegations are unverified, and the report contains errors". He continued filing memos that described what he was told about Trump's connections to Russian Federation, which, together, make up what has become known as the dossier.

According to the Washington Post, the DNC and Hillary Clinton's campaign paid Fusion GPS for the Trump dossier that the Democrats used to promote the narrative that the Trump campaign had colluded with Russian Federation.

After the election, a co-worker of Steele's - Andrew Wood, a former British diplomat in Moscow - discussed the dossier with Sen.

Cohen said he told the panels that he never engaged with, was paid by, or communicated with anyone representing the Russian government, or anyone else, about hacking or interfering with the US election, hacking the Democratic Party, or about creating fake news stories to assist the Trump campaign or to damage the Hillary Clinton campaign. The file includes salacious details that could have embarrassed Trump and been used as leverage over him.

A new report by Senate Democrats, being published later today and previewed here by the New York Times, says Russian interference in the 2016 election fits into a pattern of meddling over almost two decades. As a long-time confidant of Mr Trump, it seems certain his legal action has the backing of the president.

Trump and the White House insist there was no collusion between the campaign and the Russians.

A dossier containing Russian disinformation on Donald Trump, which was paid for by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, was used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to obtain a warrant to spy on then-candidate Donald Trump's team, reports an award-winning national security reporter.

This is why Democrats say it's important that Simpson told Judiciary Committee investigators that he did not instruct Steele to dig up dirt on Trump or find ways to embarrass him. "It's been nonstop, in fact", he said.

While Simpson claimed that Steele acted out of alarm and not out of political motivation, that argument was undermined by other parts of Simpson's own testimony that showed that Steele was "concerned" about the reopening of the Clinton email investigation, and a news story that said there was no connection between Trump and Russian Federation.

Fusion GPS is locked in another legal battle with the House Intelligence Committee, which subpoenaed the firm past year for its bank records.

Fusion GPS similarly faces several lawsuits related to its work on the dossier.

Of particular interest to the House committee are text messages sent between the FBI agent who initially led the investigation into Trump, Peter Strzok, and FBI lawyer Lisa Page.

Fusion has denied providing a copy of the memos to BuzzFeed. Lindsay Graham last week asked the Justice Department to investigate Steele, saying they had information about false statements he may have made to the government. They have also called for the release of the transcripts. Now all of Simpson's testimony to her committee is available for review - and Democrats said that's the way it should be. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., who also sits on the Judiciary Committee.
