McAdoo was Green Bay's quarterbacks coach before going to the Giants. And while team president Mark Murphy was emphatic this week that McCarthy would be the coach, there's more to it than just a signed paper and some news conference jibber-jabber. Philbin was the Colts' offensive line coach last season.

Capers has been the defensive coordinator for the Packers for nine seasons, originally joining Green Bay on January 19, 2009.

Murphy, speaking at a news conference Tuesday, said that he meant to move "quickly" to replace longtime general manager Ted Thompson, who is transitioning to an emeritus position the team has termed "senior advisor to football operations".

This comes two days after firing defensive coordinator Dom Capers, inside linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac. They finished with the 21st-ranked offense - the lowest ranking for Green Bay since 2006 - while scoring just 20 points per game.

The Green Bay Packers are now on a hunt for a new General Manager. "I'm more focused on the fit of the GM", McCarthy said.

McCarthy, who is fiercely loyal to his assistant coaches, doesn't often make wholesale changes to the staff. On a personal note, Ted's work ethic, humility and loyalty are almost unparalleled, and it has been one of the great honors of my life to work beside him. That's what keeps me up at night is the personal changes that you make. The Packers' Super Bowl victory in 2010 marked the highlight of Thompson's 13-year tenure as GM.

"We had a hell of a partnership for 12 years", McCarthy said about working with Thompson.

"When you say you have a standard at the Green Bay Packers, it stops right there", McCarthy said. Will there be any more coaching changes?

No matter what you think of McCarthy, the prospect of losing him and creating even more upheaval is something the Packers can't afford. Injuries have plagued the cornerback position.

Needless to say, the Packers are not messing around. "We've going to evaluate every aspect of the football operations".

The Packers will start by interviewing three men already with the organization - director of football operations Eliot Wolf, director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst, and director of football administration and player finance Russ Ball, who is affectionately known as Green Bay's "salary cap guru".
