Google Memo Author James Damore Sues Company For Discrimination Against White Males

James Damore, the onetime Google employee who was sacked after he wrote a memo criticizing the firm for pushing diversity, has filed a class action lawsuit against the tech giant. He also worked at Google until he was sacked in December 2016 for comments he made on a coworker's online thread relating to being targeted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation because of the their religion, according to Mashable.

"Damore, Gudeman, and other class members were ostracized, belittled, and punished for their heterodox political views, and for the added sin of their birth circumstances of being Caucasians and/or males", the 161-page court filing [PDF] stated.

As a remedy, the companies say they have been aggressively hiring women, blacks and Hispanics, but they have barely titled the scales so far.

"There's kind of a Lord of the Flies mentality there where a person can be singled out and then group shamed, bullied and fired", said Harmeet Dhillon, a lawyer for the Dhillon Law Group in a press conference on Monday.

Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc based in Mountain View, California, said in a statement: "We look forward to defending against Mr. Damore's lawsuit in court".

"They had this vague gestalt response saying he 'perpetuated gender stereotypes, ' " Dhillon, who is also a Republican Party official, said. Specifically, Damore mentioned that it seemed like Google was elevating political correctness over merit. Engineer and former Google employee Yonatan Zunger wrote that Damore "does not appear to understand engineering".

In September a year ago, a suit filed on behalf of all women hired by the company in California since 2013 claimed the company consistently pays men more for doing similar work as women in similar conditions. After a Google employee asked if the men could be taken off of the list, HR allegedly changed the system so that employees couldn't access the blacklist anymore. The training was run by the "Unbiasing Group" at Google, and there were approximately 20 Google employees present.

Damore wrote an op-ed titled "Why I was sacked by Google" in the Wall Street Journal in August after he was ousted for writing a 10-page anti-diversity memo.

Google's chief executive Sundar Pichai explained that "portions of the memo violate our code of conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace". Specifically, he asserts that women are on average, because of biological factors, more cooperative, more neurotic and less driven for status, making them less qualified for or interested in software engineering.

Google's attempts to hire workers from diverse backgrounds represents a form of "invidious discrimination" on the part of the tech giant, "to the detriment of Caucasian and male employees", he added.

"People generally have good intentions, but we all have biases which are invisible to us", he wrote in the memo.

More examples of Google's alleged bias against conservatives can be found in the full lawsuit here. Damore also accused Google's senior leadership of silencing conservative views.
