Spartak Moscow accused of racism after tweeting video of black players with shocking caption: 'See how the chocolate melts in the sun'

The Russian club shared a video of several black players training in the sun in Abu Dhabi, along with the caption "See the chocolate melts in the sun", with a few chocolate emojis thrown in for good measure.

Spartak Moscow, Russian league champs previous year, later posted a video in which one of the three Brazilian players in the earlier post, Fernando, denied there was any racism at the club.

The footage prompted criticism on social media and was followed up with a disapproving statement by Federation Internationale de Football Association, but the club has responded with a new video message featuring the players concerned.

The same phrase is heard during the video, apparently spoken by Spartak and Russian Federation defender Georgy Dzhikiya.

Dzhikiya said: "There is no racism in our team, we are all brothers, we're one big family".

The original post was then deleted, before the club uploaded a third video with Dzhikiya and the three Brazilians in a group hug.

Midfielder Fernando and winger Pedro Rocha - the other two players refered to as "chocolates" - also appeared smiling alongside Dzhikiya, who kisses Adriano on the cheek. "I love you, my friend".

Russia, billed to host the FIFA World Cup in June has a long history of racial prejudices and intolerance.

"Racism is one of the biggest issues Russian Federation faces in the year they host the World Cup, references of this kind show how some minorities are seen by some people in the country".

But the club was condemned by European anti-discrimination groups, which noted Spartak's - and Russia's - history of racism.

"This shows a shocking level of ignorance".

Spartak was ordered to close part of its stadium for another Youth League game after UEFA ruled its fans abused Liverpool striker Bobby Adekanye with monkey chants. References like this show how some minorities are seen by some in the country.

Liverpool made a formal complaint to UEFA after Brewster accused Spartak defender Leonid Mironov of abusing him during the meeting between the club's Under-19 sides.
