Fodder scam case: Lalu moves Jharkhand High Court against conviction, seeks bail

Lalu Prasad Yadav arrives at the special CBI court in Ranchi from Birsa Munda Jail on Wednesday

Lalu Prasad Yadav arrives at the special CBI court in Ranchi from Birsa Munda Jail on Wednesday

"Lalu is in jail to save his illegally acquired wealth".

According to Lalu's counsels, he will be moving the Jharkhand High Court later this week challenging the decision of the CBI court and also file petition for bail.

During the proceedings of the case in Ranchi on January 4, the CBI judge had also stated: "Laluji, we are getting a lot of references and calls for you" without naming the people who had called him up. The other two cases are relating to fraudulent withdrawal of money Dumka and Doranda treasury, judgment in which is expected in February.

He said that Lalu was in jail not because he took part in the freedom struggle but for amassing illegal wealth through corrupt means.

He was on bail in the first case when he was convicted and sentenced in the second. Other government officials remained tight-lipped.

Lalu Prasad was sentenced to three-and-a-half year's imprisonment on offences of cheating, along with criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

JD (U) spokesman Neeraj Kumar, in a statement issued in Patna, said, "Lalu Yadav is a person with feudal mindset who can make his party workers go to any extent to serve his personal interest".

Sources said Mahto and Madan Yadav, both residents of Jharkhand, had moved into a house in Ranchi a few weeks before the December 23 CBI special court verdict against Lalu Yadav.

The RJD chief has spent nearly a fortnight in the Bisra Munda Jail in Ranchi. Within minutes of the cops at Lower Bazar police station registering the FIR and sending a copy to the Ranchi civil court, Lakshman and Madan reached the court and surrendered. Earlier, on September 30, 2013, Prasad was held guilty in another case pertaining to illegal withdrawal of Rs 377 million and handed down a five-year prison term.

Last month, the special CBI judge in Ranchi sentenced Lalu to three-and-a-half years jail in a fodder scam case.
