Ford Ranger debuts in Detroit

All-New 2019 Ranger Fact

All-New 2019 Ranger Fact

The company is leaning on its reputation for trucks for the North American relaunch of a truck it once sold hundreds of thousands of. That is not the case. A Ranger Raptor hasn't been confirmed for North America yet, but spy photos have us crossing our fingers.

It's a real truck.

The Ranger for North America rides on a completely re-engineered, fully boxed, high-strength-steel frame with six crossmembers to meet North American safety and stiffness requirements, says Rick Bolt, chief program engineer. Suspension components of note include a double A-arm front suspension and monotube front dampers. Power steering will be electronically-assisted. A steel bumper with an available trailer hitch receiver can tow campers, ATVs and boats. Powertrain-wise, there's only one offered, at least for the moment. Two body styles are set to be offered: the SuperCab and the larger SuperCrew. Metal trim pieces over the wheel wells can be color matched or accented with a handsome magnetic grey color.

The company is making no secret of the shared DNA between Ranger and the F-Series models, a homage that is paid even in exterior design. As buyers add more features to full-size trucks, the average price of an F-Series pickup has crept past $45,000. This truck segment includes the Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado.

Now when speaking about the Ford Ranger, however, the automaker was more mum and provided only crumbs in terms of specifications.

Ford is hoping to seize on the fact that sales of midsize trucks are up 83 percent since 2014, largely to the credit of General Motors' reentry into what was a dying market segment back in 2015. The lack of a stripper model with plastic wheel well trim pieces leads us to believe that higher-volume, lower-profit fleet sales/work truck sales aren't as high of a priority.

Power will be provided by a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, although no performance numbers were provided, Ford is targeting the Ranger to offer best-in-class torque. The crank and rods are forged steel. The 2.3-liter will be exclusively paired to a 10-speed automatic.

Both 2WD and 4WD models will have Dana locking differentials, with an electronic locking rear diff available (standard on FX2 and FX4 Off-Road variants).

Being that not every new, adventurous Ranger owner will have much off-road experience, Ford plans to offer a few pieces of tech on the FX packages to ensure that owners still have a decent chance to get where they're going, skillset be damned.

"It appeals to your ability to do whatever you want", she said. That has four drive modes - normal; grass, gravel and snow; mud and ruts; and sand - that can be flipped between while the Ranger is in motion. Grass/gravel/snow simply numbs throttle response.

In addition, the FX4 also gets Ford's brand-new Trail Control system, which allows the driver to set a speed between 1 and 20 miles per hour that the truck will automatically maintain on the trail, taking care of the throttle and braking on its own. Think of this as cruise-control blended with a hill-descent control system. An off-road drive assist technology maintains speed as low as 1 miles per hour and as high as 20 miles per hour, in any transfer-case setting. Where it differs from a cruise control is that pressing the brake while it's activated doesn't deactivate it but rather, brings the cruise speed down to whatever the driver slows to.

Available driver-assist technologies include standard automatic emergency braking, while lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, a reverse sensing system and blind spot information system with trailer coverage are standard on XLT and Lariat trim levels.

Sync3 is available on the vehicle, as well as available FordPass with a WiFi hotspot.

Ford says the Ranger will initially be offered in XL, XLT and Lariat configurations. The FX4 Off-Road Package provides additional trail capability with off-road-tuned shocks, all-terrain tires, a frame-mounted heavy-gauge steel front bash plate, frame-mounted skid plates and FX4 badging. One of the casualties was the Ford Ranger, and it slipped into that good night after the 2011 model year.
