SB I-65 closed in Jackson County for 3-semi crash; closure could last until 2 pm

Crews with the Indiana Department of Transportation are getting ready to fix I-65 in Jackson County Thursday following a Wednesday morning crash and chemical fire that closed the interstate for more than 15 hours.

A crash on Interstate 65 in IN led to the leak of hazardous chemicals, and police have said that first responders are facing an explosion risk.

"That then in turn pushed that truck and tractor and trailer into another vehicle, also a tractor trailer", Wheeles said.

Homes within a half mile of the area are being evacuated as a precaution.

After the burned out damage was cleared away, IN DOT crews were able to assess the damage to the roads.

The crash occurred near the 43 mm OF i-65 at about 5 a.m.

Wheeles said the company hired to clean up the spill told crews that the chemicals had mixed, which led to the fire.

Wheeles said they're still working to determine exactly what kind of chemicals the truck was carrying and where it was headed.

- I-80/94 was fully closed Wednesday morning near Gary, Indiana, because of downed power lines.

As a result of the crash, some of the chemicals from Okpeh's vehicle spilled inside the trailer and onto the roadway.

A passenger in one of the vehicles suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
