IDF says it destroyed a Hamas attack tunnel in southern Gaza

A fisherman from the Gaza Strip was shot dead by the Egyptian army overnight for unclear reasons, Palestinian officials said Saturday, calling for an immediate investigation into the incident.

Israeli aircraft attacked a target in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, the army said, and also closed the goods crossing between the Palestinian enclave and the Jewish state.

"Hamas must understand that we will not permit these attacks and we will respond with even greater force", Netanyahu said in remarks to Israeli media before departing on his trip to India.

He said he was not aware of any casualties from the destruction of the tunnel, which was still being built.

Israel denied claims the tunnel was used for smuggling, asserting it was intended by Hamas to bring terrorists and weapons from Egypt into the Gaza Strip for a possible future combined attack on the Kerem Shalom crossing from the Egyptian side.

Conricus said the tunnel destroyed Saturday was dug by key operatives of Hamas and was 1.5 km long (about one mile), penetrating 80 metres (260 feet) under the Kerem Shalom border crossing into Israel and into Egypt.

Defence Minister Avigdor Liberman said in a statement, last night, Israel military carried out an operation over a violation of Israeli sovereignty.

Israel National News reported that IDF's spokesperson Ronen Manelis says that the tunnel was located several days ago. Our message to the Gazan leadership and residents of the strip is clear: "invest in the sanctity of life and not in death tunnels".

The army stated that the tunnel had been identified and destroyed by a combination of advanced technology, intelligence and operational capability.

Last week, the IDF struck what many assumed to be a tunnel in the Gaza Strip, following a series of mortar attacks.

Tensions between Israel and Palestinians flared up after US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and relocate US embassy to the city from Tel Aviv.

Unrest has included rockets being fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel, with Israel's military responding with air strikes.
