India can't just chop-and-change in every game, suggests Sourav Ganguly

Rohit, Dhawan and the limits of 'current form'

Rohit, Dhawan and the limits of 'current form'

"But the way the bowlers showed their skillsets and their character in the first game, it motivated us as a batting group also to support them and play together as a unit and get some good results out there". It could be Ajinkya Rahane in the middle in place of Rohit Sharma and there's a possibility of KL Rahul coming at top of the order.

India, despite all the pre-series talk about this being their best opportunity to win in South Africa, weren't overly disappointed about the loss at Newlands with skipper Virat Kohli adopting a reasonably philosophical attitude.

But in spite of all the speculations regarding possible changes in the team, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly said that the side should keep faith in their current set-up.

Against Sri Lanka at home, Rahane scored a mere 17 runs at 3.4 while Rohit amassed 217 runs in one Test fewer than Rahane.

"We did that similar thing in the past with Shikhar as well".

"These things can always be looked at in hindsight - thinking what if or what if not".

When asked about Rahane's exclusion in favor of Rohit, Kohli told that the decision was taken considering current form and not statistical or technical efficiency. What impressed me most today was he wanted to bowl more overs.

Scoring runs at home or away against a weakened Sri Lankan Test bowling attack was never going to have any bearing when facing the likes of Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada on their turf. The impressive performances of Khan, Ashish Nehra and Javagal Srinath powered India into the final of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.

The match was over after three days' play and South Africa were victorious despite being dismissed for 130 in their second innings.

For Dhawan it was his inability to read the admittedly variable bounce the pitch offered, seen from the way he got out in the second innings. "With six batters, you can afford to go out and play loose shots", said Kohli.

Ganguly further went on to praise allrounder Hardik Pandya, who scored 93 runs in the first innings and nearly saved India from a disaster.

Not just Rahane, Kohli also dropped Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the playing XI. "There are two ways of taking it - you can take it personally and fade away, or you can take it on board and make a play. Now it is time to move forward and focus on the second Test".

Compare this to the batting record of Dhawan, whose only notable outings beyond the subcontinent came as far back as 2014 when he scored 115 and 98 in Auckland and Wellington. India will have to bottle down and fight hard in the batting.

Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan struggled in both innings of the 72-run defeat in Cape Town, Vijay making just 14 across his two knocks.
