The suicide note said that some boys had barged inside Dhanya's home, harassed her and her mother since Dhanya was spotted speaking to a Muslim man.

An Indian woman who tried to promote peace between Hindus and Muslims has committed suicide after being subjected to harassment and cyber-bullying.

The other four accused are still absconding.

The Mudigere police in Karnataka have arrested a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Bharatiya Janata Party's youth wing, for allegedly driving a 20-year-old college student to suicide because she wrote about liking Muslims on a Whatsapp group. A screenshot of the conversation got widely circulated on social networking platforms by right wingers, especially the Sangh Parivar groups.

Reports suggest that girl was friends with a Muslim man and that she had told one of her friends on WhatsApp about how she loved Muslims.

"We have registered a case of an unnatural death". She was also threatened for befriending a Muslim man.

Annamalai said authorities are prepared to arrest "whoever has criticized the woman, whether on Facebook or WhatsApp". They accused Dhanyashree of roaming with men from other community and created an issue of love jihad. The caller - he later identified himself as Santosh, a Bajrang Dal activist from Mangaluru - also asked the woman why she was wearing a head scarf in some of the photographs she had posted on social media. The screenshot went viral and led to people posting hate comments causing mental trauma to the girl and her family.

The SP said that the police will arrest all those who harassed the victim orally or through social media.

The Hindu report added that the police have also recovered the girl's phone. Ahead of the New Year's Eve celebrations, Karnataka moral police had called for the closing of hotels by midnight, as they encourage "drugs and sex".
