Iran rejects Trump's call to renegotiate terms of nuclear deal

Iran calls fresh US sanctions illegal, hostile

"Iran strongly announces that it will make no measure beyond its [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] commitments and will make no changes in the nuclear deal neither now nor in the future", the foreign ministry said.

Unrelated to the nuclear deal, Trump approved sanctions against 14 individuals and entities, including against Sadeq Larijani, the head of Iran's judiciary whom the Trump administration holds responsible for the violent crackdown on recent anti-government protests that erupted in the country.

In a White House background call on Friday, senior administration officials confirmed that President Donald Trump will waive sanctions on Friday one last time.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said earlier on Twitter that the deal was "not renegotiable" and that Trump's move "amounts to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement".

The White House faced a series of deadlines related to the deal on Friday, most importantly, whether to renew or terminate a waiver for sanctions on Iran's central bank and energy sector.

First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said in a post on his Instagram page that the United States would "lose out" if they withdrew from the deal.

Iran, too, has been abundantly clear that it will not renegotiate the deal.

The foreign ministry vowed to retaliate but did not say what form any action might take.

Trump, however, has stated that this will be the "last time" he waives those sanctions, unless the United States and its European allies can find a way to remove "loopholes" in the nuclear deal within the next four months. The president also said a new deal must have no expiration date, and that it must impose sanctions if Iran develops or tests long-range missiles.

Iran says the missiles it has tested are not created to carry nuclear warheads and insists its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful. It now expires after a decade.

Trump will next have to deal with these decisions in mid-May.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammed Javad Zarif, tweeted Friday that the United States "must bring itself into full compliance - just like Iran", in reference to the 2015 nuclear deal among Iran and world powers, including Russian Federation.

The parliamentarian went on to say that if the U.S. really makes such a move (violating the key provision), Iran will show a reaction that would astound not only the USA but the entire world.

"If at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately", he said. The foreign affairs deputy minister in Moscow, Sergei Ryabkov noted that Russian Federation has a very pessimistic stance on the documents and decisions made by the American president about the Iran nuclear deal.

The White House is working with the congress on a USA legislation, which seeks provisions to permanently prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and subject Iran's long-range missile program to severe sanctions.

The other signatories to the deal - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - and the European Union, which oversaw the talks, were watching carefully.

The Iranian president further hailed the deal as "a long-lasting victory for Iran".
