Liow: MH370 search resumes, expected to cost RM285m if plane found

Malaysian govt appoints US-based exploration firm Ocean Infinity to hunt for Malaysia Airlines MH370 on no find, no fee basis

The government signed a "no cure, no fee" deal with the Houston, Texas-based company to resume the hunt for the plane, a year after the official search by Malaysia, Australia and China in the southern Indian Ocean was called off.

Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200-million ($157 million) search of a 120,000 sq.km area in January past year, despite investigators urging the search be extended to a 25,000-square-km area further to the north.

Flight 370 took off from Kuala Lumpur on March 8, 2014, and was headed to Beijing when it disappeared. Beyond that area, Ocean Infinity will receive $70 million, Liow said.

Ocean Infinity, which specializes in the collection of "high resolution geophysical seabed data", said in a press release that its command vessel, Seabed Constructor, is en route and "close to" the search area.

U.S. company Ocean Inifinity will search for the missing plane on a "no find, no fee" basis.

Oliver Plunkett, CEO of Ocean Infinity, said the search vessel, equipped with eight underwater autonomous vehicles packed with sensors, detectors and cameras, is capable to comb some 1,200 square km per day, much faster than previous search efforts, which means they will finish the whole 25,000 square km search area within three or four weeks.

Plunkett said further analysis from scientists, the fact that there had been a search covering 120,000 square km and Ocean Infinity's approach to carry out the search made him more confident about this search.

'We have a realistic prospect of finding it, ' he said.

The official search was extremely hard because no transmissions were received from the aircraft after its first 38 minutes of flight. He said his government was committed to continuing with the search. Systems created to automatically transmit the flight's position failed to work after this point, said a final report from Australian Transport Safety Board last January. Now it's back to four years ago where we have to wait everyday (to find out) whether debris can be found, ' said Shin Kok Chau, whose wife Tan Ser Kuin was a flight attendant on MH370.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said in its final report in October that it was "inconceivable" for a large commercial aircraft to vanish in the modern era, but they now had a better understanding of where it might be.

Investigators believe MH370 headed south over the Indian Ocean for about six hours before plummeting into the water.

If the debris field (scattered remains of the plane at the bottom of the ocean), cockpit voice recorder or flight recorder are discovered within the first 5,000 sq km (1930 sq mi) searched, Ocean Infinity will command a fee of $20 million, rising to $70 million if any of those items are found outside the initial 25,000 sq km area.
