He gained over 40 positions on his overnight ranking of 98, to finish the stage and overall at 56th place.

The 5th stage kicked off from San Juan De Marcona to move to Arequipa which was the rally's last stop in Peru. This is the second injury pull out for Sherco TVS after Adrien Metge withdrew pulled out with a broken leg during stage 2.

Hero MotoSports Team Rallys debutant Oriol Mena continued his fine form of yesterday to begin the stage well but lost some time in finding a way point in the later part of the stage. After this sprint along the beach, the competitors were challenged to tackle one of the longest sandy section ever in the history of the Dakar, a total of 100 kms with dunes of all sizes making up a total stage run of 444km including the special stage of 330 kms.

In the bike field, defending Dakar champion Sunderland saw his hopes of back-to-back wins ended when he suffered an off and was attended to by the Dakar medical team for back pain.

Sebastien Loeb - a nine-time world rally champion - also pulled out after his co-driver Daniel Elena got injured as their auto landed awkwardly in the desert.

The former FIA World Rally Championship star is competing in his third running of Dakar, having made his début with the Mini team in 2016, where he finished an impressive fourth place, picking up a stage win along the way. Van Beveren finished five minutes ahead of teammate Xavier de Soultrait, with Austria's Matthias Walkner seven minutes off the pace on his KTM. There was one waypoint we missed and it took three or four minutes to get back up a steep hill to it.

Ten Brinke finished Stage 5 third, only 4m32s behind Peterhansel.

Loeb beat Carlos Sainz by 95 seconds, followed by Peterhansel for a Peugeot sweep of the podium.

In the auto category, Team Peugeot Total's Stephane Peterhansel and Jean Paul Cottret increased their gap at the top by winning the fifth stage.

After tackling the sand dunes, the drivers and riders will next have to tackle the high mountains of Bolivia.
