Thomas S. Monson, president of Mormon church, dies at 90

Mormon President Thomas Monson, who headed one of the world's fastest growing and most affluent religions, has died at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah, the church said on Wednesday.

Father-of-three Monson spent five decades in his church's leadership councils, and has been a well-known figure among the Mormon community for generations. The change increased the number of full-time missionaries and spawned almost 60 new missions, according to a Salt Lake Tribune article. A successor is not expected to be formally chosen by the Church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles until after President Monson's funeral. "President Nelson is remarkably healthy", Eric Hawkins, a spokesman for the church, said. Find someone who is having a hard time, or is ill, or lonely, and do something for them.

Monson will also be remembered for his emphasis on humanitarian work; leading the faith's involvement in the passage of gay marriage ban in California in 2008; continuing the church's push to be more transparent about its past; and lowering the minimum age for missionaries.

Talking to the Salt Lake Tribune, Nelson said: "Each of us during that sacred moment felt a spiritual confirmation".

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, President of Universal Society of Hinduism, said that they were saddened by the passing of President Monson.

According to the church's website: "The appointment of a new president of the Church happens in an orderly way that - remarkably in today's world - avoids any trace of internal lobbying for position or rank".

In October 2012, President Monson lowered the age requirements for missionaries, allowing young men at age 18 and young women at age 19 to begin church service missions worldwide.

In total, over 1500 members of the Church have resigned over the issue so far. "He attended Salt Lake City public schools and graduated cum laude from the University of Utah in 1948, receiving a degree in business management". Under the Utah Compact the the church called for more humane immigration policies. Nelson has served as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve since July 2015.

"Church history gives ample evidence of our members being treated with hatred and bigotry". He emulated Christ in every particular, helping all of us draw closer to God by drawing all of us closer to each other. There was no reason why I shouldn't join the Church, other than I didn't want to be a Mormon. Reese noted the last time a conclave lasted more than four days was in 1831.

Upon the death of the prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the First Presidency (consisting of the president and his two counselors) is automatically dissolved.
