No. 2 Mountaineers Fall At No. 8 Texas Tech

Second half dooms WVU in first loss since November

Second half dooms WVU in first loss since November

Now Texas Tech (15-2, 4-1) is part of a four-way tie atop arguably the nations toughest conference with 13 league games to go. A 2 p.m. tipoff is set for the game, to be televised nationally on ESPN. Add in the most consistent offensive player Lamont West, the poise of Jevon Carter and the big plays of Daxter Miles Jr late in the games, I believe the Mountaineers pull away in the final minutes to win the game.

With longtime assistant Jeff Capel in charge, the short-handed and illness-ravaged Blue Devils (15-2, 3-2 ACC) won their second straight and moved their conference record over.500 for the first time this season.

The Mountaineers (15-2, 4-1) couldnt hold an 11-point lead in the final 13 minutes and had their nation-leading 15-game winning streak stopped. Its the Big 12.

"It's not even close", he said. Maybe the starting five remains the same when Ahmad returns. "The thing I've always liked about Esa is that he knows how to play".

"I worry about his conditioning", Huggins said. He's practiced with us, but he really hasn't practiced with the guys who played the most; he's played against those guys.

Stanford 73, Washington 64: One-time Washington commit Daejon Davis returned to his hometown and had 16 points, Reid Travis also finished with 16 points, and Stanford (10-8, 4-1) completed its first two-game road sweep in conference play in almost eight years with a 73-64 win over Washington on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers are 10-2 all-time versus the Red Raiders and won 7 of the last 8. Texas Tech is promoting the game as a "Red Out" with fans going to 15,000-seat United Supermarkets Arena encouraged to wear red.

"You'll just have to wait and see", Huggins said during Thursday's Big 12 teleconference. "You work like insane to get to the point where everybody is excited about playing you".

"I know we're going to be a frog again at some point". "They (Texas Tech) are for real".

That's certainly not the case today.

West Virginia will get another offensive weapon this weekend with Esa Ahmad eligible to play after serving his suspension.

The Red Raiders shot 58 percent in the second half while holding the Mountaineers to 33 percent.

The Spartans (16-3, 4-2) are struggling, losing two of their last three games with an overtime win over Rutgers in between the setbacks.

The rematch in Morgantown also required two sessions to decide, with West Virginia outlasting the Red Raiders 83-74.

Senior Jada Terry followed with nine points, eight rebounds and two blocks for the Lady Raiders. Thomas Welsh scored 20 points - two off his career best - to lead the Bruins (13-5, 4-2), who were only 8 of 18 at the free-throw line.

Next to Evans are senior guards Justin Gray and Niem Stevenson, freshman guard Zhaire Smith and junior center Norense Odiase.

Evans was the only Texas Tech player to reach double figures in the 75-65 loss to Oklahoma with 19. Simpson finished with 16 points, taking advantage of a game plan that called for him and his teammates to drive toward the basket against a shot-blocking team. "He makes huge plays for them".

What makes this even more exciting is that Zach Smith, the senior forward for Texas Tech still has more to give, as he's still dealing with a nagging ankle injury.

Udoka Azubuike added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Jayhawks (14-3, 4-1 Big 12), who beat their Interstate 70 rival for the sixth straight time and 12th in a row at Allen Fieldhouse.

Culver is third, averaging 10.3 points with a team-high-tying 23 3s.

"I have thought about incorporating Esa I think every day since we've started", Huggins said. "There might be two as good, but I don't think anybody has two better freshmen than their freshmen". They can bounce it. "They're extremely well coached".

Huggins is expecting another down-to-the-wire finish on Saturday. "We have to do some soul-searching", coach Tom Izzo said. "There are not going to be very many routs, if any, in this league".
