Video taken by passengers show waves crashing at sea, water pouring down stairs and damage throughout the ship. "I'll never go on any type of boat again in my life after this".

Passenger Karoline Ross told CBS it was "one of the scariest moments" of her life. "It was so tilted I was shaking".

"There were people crying, everyone was throwing up".

Cruise vessel the Norwegian Breakaway sailed straight into the thick of the storm that has been smashing the eastern seaboard of the U.S., after it departed the picturesque and balmy Bahamas last week. The Breakaway, which saw some flooding during the storm, is expected to begin sailing from New Orleans in November. As a result, Norwegian Breakaway's 14 day cruise that was originally scheduled to depart on January 5, will now depart on Saturday, January 6, at 3 p.m.

"People were getting sick", Mr Ross told Newsday said.

The ship was originally due back in NY on Friday morning and the following sailing will not depart until Saturday afternoon. Due to the ship's late arrival today, and the ongoing weather situation, embarking guests are encouraged to arrive to the pier on Saturday morning.

They later sent CBS2 a second statement.

Angry passengers on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, the Breakaway, said last week they dealt with extreme conditions as their boat sailed right through Thursday's winter storm. All guests and crew are safe.

The company also apologized to guests for any discomfort, and said they're working with individual guests directed affected by the ordeal for compensation.

Back on terre firma, the Ross family said they will be asking for a refund for nine staterooms, but what they really want are answers. I honestly wasn't sure we were going to make it through the night.

The cruise line has apologised to passengers following the journey.
