Now even Nigel Farage wants a second Brexit referendum

"In any event, even though we don't think this intervention has materially increased the chances of a second referendum, it does serve to bring it into the market consciousness", the note says.

On Thursday, a ComRes poll for the Daily Mirror newspaper of 1,049 adults showed that although more people think there should not be a second referendum (51 to 43 percent), if there were to be a re-run, voters say they would opt to stay in the European Union by 55 to 45 percent.

Ukip said they were still opposed to a second referendum, although party leader Henry Bolton said he was confident Brexit would win by a bigger margin if another vote were held. They will go on whinging and whining and moaning all the way through this process.

But he said he feared a second referendum may well be inevitable. "The percentage that would vote to leave next time would be very much bigger than it was last time round".

The former Ukip leader, who recently bemoaned being "53, separated and skint", will lose €40,000 (£35,500) in total, the Guardian has learned, after European parliament auditors concluded he had misspent that amount of EU funds.

The vote in June 2016 was closely run with 51.9 per cent voting to leave and 48.1 per cent voting to remain.

Farage said he now had a similar feeling to the one he had 20 years ago when Tony Blair appeared to be preparing the country for an eventual entry into the euro.

Meanwhile, Brexit could cost the United Kingdom almost 500,000 jobs in a worst-case scenario, according to a study commissioned by the Mayor of London.

As negotiations continue in Brussels, and Brexit legislation passes through parliament, the government has already accepted the case for a two-year transition period in which the United Kingdom would effectively remain in the single market and customs union. "People are now far more aware of the costs of Brexit and the fabrications of the Leave campaign".

But this idea was written off by other Brexit campaigners who urged the government to press on with exit talks.

"For perhaps the first time in his life, Nigel Farage is making a valid point", said Labour MP Chuka Umunna, a leading supporter of the pro-EU Open Britain campaign group.

"The figure you referred to was his "no deal" scenario".

Comparatively, maintaining the status quo would see migration falling from 232,000 in 2020 to 220,000 a decade later.

However, his pension as an MEP is understood to be worth £73,000 per year and he will also be entitled to a transitional allowance of £117,000 when Britain leaves the European Union next year.
