Pat Shurmur to Giants, Matt Patricia to Lions

New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has been linked to both teams' head-coaching vacancies the past few weeks, and it appears the pendulum has swung back to its origin.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning that Patricia is expected to be named the next head coach of the Lions, according to sources.

Patricia, 43, joined the Patriots staff in 2004.

It always made sense for Patricia to land with the Lions, where general manager Bob Quinn is a former Patriots executive in pro personnel and scouting.

A native of Sherrill, N.Y., Patricia was an offensive lineman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He began his coaching career there as well, before making stops at Amherst College and Syracuse.

Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia of the New England Patriots watches the action on the sidelines during their game against the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on December 13, 2015 in Houston, Texas. Todd Haley's contract is up in Pittsburgh at the end of the season and so is John DeFilippo's in Philadelphia, and I'm at least talking to one of them before rushing out to sign Brian Schottenheimer for the position.

There are also reports that Patricia is the top choice of the Giants. The Lions also gave Teryl Austin an interview but Austin removed himself from consideration and moved on to become the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals. They're also eyeing Josh McDaniels, the Patriots' offensive coordinator, and Pat Shurmur, the Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator. King went on to add that missing out on Patricia could mean the job passes to Vrabel.

With so many similar names involved in the head coaching searches things should start to move quickly once the first domino falls.

In Detroit, Patricia would inherit the better quarterback, in his prime, with a general manager he knows and trusts.
