And yet, Mayfield still nearly had enough magic in the tank to propel the Sooners into the title game anyway. It was a heavyweight title match with each team giving and absorbing blows to the delight of 92,844 fans.

A short time later, Georgia scored, tying it up and sending the game into overtime.

Then a familiar demon to OU football reared its head.

After Georgia took the lead to begin the fourth, Lincoln Riley stuck to the ground game and used big runs from Anderson and Mayfield on a touchdown drive to tie it at 38.

"He told them, 'Hey, guys, we got y'all".

"We didn't play the way we were capable of, but the best news is we get a chance to play again", Smart said.

That is what is going to haunt him in the months to come: The tale of two Baker Mayfields.

ROQUAN SMITH: It was just the halftime adjustments, we had to come in, we knew we were going to face adversity throughout the game, and we had to make those adjustments and just come out and play with a little more passion.

The Bulldogs had 317 yards rushing, including 181 by Michel, to finally beat the high-scoring Oklahoma offense led by Heisman Trophy victor Baker Mayfield. After defeating a high-octane offensive team like Oklahoma, Georgia should feel more comfortable in facing an Alabama squad that's patterned after they are (or vice versa) - hard-nosed, physical, defensive minded. He didn't count on it being snagged by Georgia up-man Tae Crowder, resulting in a 12-yard net, and Riley certainly didn't foresee the 55-yard field goal that Bulldogs kicker Rodrigo Blankenship nailed as the first-half clock expired. But three straight run plays brought a fourth-and-1 and Riley opted to use Austin Seibert instead of trying for a first down. He does a lot of good things, and I'm really proud of his growth. "I think we'll be 100 percent, though, for sure".

Then they did a good job of executing. Bulldogs linebacker Lorenzo Carter had something to say about it; he leaped and reached his hand in the air, and *THUMP, * field goal blocked.

Seibert said he hit a clean ball and added that the kick wasn't a low trajectory. "We wanted to run the ball, and we did that". "He made plays all game". "That's what happens in big-time games".

Score they did as Sony Michel capped his 181-yard night with a 27-yard touchdown run on the second play of the series.

Georgia trailed 31-17 at halftime as the game featured both teams with over 250 total yards of offense and six total touchdowns. He ended his Texas Tech career with a 5-3 record, throwing for 2315 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.

First half dominance, however, belonged to Oklahoma. In that stretch, the OU offense and defense couldn't gain traction. Mayfield went 4-for-7 for 19 yards. Georgia tallied five sacks with single sacks coming from Jonathan Ledbetter, David Marshall, Tyler Clark and D'Andre Walker. Mayfield said after the game that Monday's loss hurt more because it was his final game with the school.

The Sooners put up 48 points on Georgia's defense and Mayfield passed for 287 yards with two touchdowns on the day. We had some - we'd separate ourself a little bit there in the first half and weren't able to maintain it.

The flamboyant and celebratory Mayfield is a great player, but another version of the Heisman victor appears when the Sooners have faced adversity.
