Samsung SDS Introduces 'NexShop' for Future Cars in Concert with Harman

"Together with Samsung, we have increased innovation speed through scale, resources and competencies to help automakers focus on the car's evolution from device-centric to experience centric", said Dinesh Paliwal, HARMAN President and CEO. It's called the MoodRoof, and it's actually part of the bigger Moodscape entertainment setup.

And to bring everything together Samsung and Harman are spearheading a new 5G-capable telematics system for cars, capable of giving 1Gbps connectivity to all the instruments of your vehicle. The traditional central infotainment screen has been ditched in favor of a huge, retractable display that encompasses the entire width of the dashboard (minus the area reserved for the instrument cluster, also digital). With the platform, it will be much simpler to integrate best-in-class technology into new vehicles, while also building a foundation for fleets of the future.

Samsung and Harman also said they would deliver the industry's first 5G-ready automotive solution and multi-band conformal antenna to enable secure, fast and reliable data communications. What does DRVLINE offer? The company is all about connectivity as far as automobiles, consumer durables and enterprise products are concerned.

Samsung and Harman claim the system has been designed in such a way to allow it to be scaled up from Level 3 autonomous technology to Level 4 and then eventually Level 5; the highest rating for driving with human interaction.

Samsung acquired HARMAN less than a year ago and is already leveraging the acquisition with new connected auto solutions which were announced this year at CES. The industry has made incredible advances in automation, yet in-car compute is still a long way from approximating the power of our brains. In addition, HARMAN announced that a leading European automaker will be the first to use and implement the new 5G Automotive Telematics solution provided by HARMAN and Samsung. And just this week at CES, Chinese tech giant Baidu unveiled a major update to an open self-driving vehicle platform of its own called Project Apollo that makes some of the same promises as Samsung. The $8 billion deal to buy Harman in March past year was the biggest overseas acquisition ever made by a South Korean company, and it's now starting to look like a very wise move.
