REPORT: Seahawks fire OC Darrell Bevell

The Seahawks have fired offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, according to a report Tuesday night. Bevell was likely dismissed because the Seahawks finished 15th in total offense this season and had an atrocious offensive line. Bevell was reportedly informed of the decision Tuesday night. He replaced Jeremy Bates, who followed Carroll to Seattle from USC but was sacked after one season. Seattle was 15th in total offense and 11th in scoring but had particular trouble moving the ball in December, producing fewer than 150 yards in both a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and a Week 16 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Late Tuesday evening, a story broke reporting Seattle had relieved Bevell of his offensive coordinator duties.

As of mid-day Wednesday, the Seahawks had not announced Bevell's firing.

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin, as he has done on other occasions, defended Bevell after the season.

"We've had challenges", Bevell said.

Head coach Pete Carroll tried to take the heat for the call, but much of the blame was still put on Bevell's shoulders.

It was the Seahawks' final offensive play of Super Bowl XLIX three years ago that drew the most heat from Seahawks fans.

Offensive line coach Tom Cable has also come under much criticism for the performance of a group that many have pointed to as one of the primary issues for the offense - Seattle was just 23rd in the National Football League in rushing this season at 101.8 per game after ranking in the top four every year from 2012-15, seasons when Lynch was the team's primary ball carrier. Offensively, that's what we've seen time and time again is that we do not execute the way that we should.

While this era's Seahawks have never been known as an offensive juggernaut, Bevell lead them to two top-10 finishes in total offense during his tenure, finishing as high as fourth place in 2015. The former Washington and USC coach worked for Carroll with the Trojans.

Another candidate could be USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin, who it was revealed on Tuesday was interviewed to be the head coach of the Raiders.

And another could be Mike Shula, who was sacked as offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers earlier this week and was the head coach at Alabama from 2003-06.
