Firetruck delivers 5-year-old survivor of church shooting home to Sutherland Springs

Ryland celebrated a birthday while recovering at San Antonio's University Hospital.

More: When a gunman opens fire, do you know how to save a life?

The signs started sprouting at the Wilson County Line.

Duncan said he is overwhelmed by the support for the idea. Ward isn't just any 6-year-old, and it wasn't just any trip home.

Ryland was rescued by volunteer firefighter Rusty Duncan, who visited the little boy through weeks of recovery and, fittingly, was the one to escort him back home.

Ryland suffered massive injuries November 5 when a gunman stormed the rural First Baptist Church and slaughtered 26 people, including Ryland's stepmother, Joanne, who tried valiantly to shield her kids.

"When I found out yesterday that they would go ahead and release him, it was really an overwhelming feeling of joy that he would be able to go out and go home". "And the way he survived with all those shots, he's got to be a special little boy".

Ryland, who was hospitalized for more than two months after being shot several times, will finally get his ride Thursday. "He survived a great ordeal and we're proud of where he's come from".

The community can gather on the highway's shoulders in the grassy areas to welcome Ryland home but have been asked to give the Ward family privacy once law enforcement officials arrive at Sutherland Springs.

"He's been through more than most of us have been through in our whole lives", Cordes said. "I rolled her over and grabbed him and started running outside with him".

"I was going to buy balloons at H-E-B (grocery store), but they donated them to me", Janie Boren said.

Chris Ward's wife and Ryland's stepmother, Joann Lookingbill Ward, was among the dead, as well as Joann Lookingbill Ward's daughters, Brooke Bryanne Ward, 5, and Emily Garcia, 7. The church promises to do whatever it takes to help the family persevere.
