The Trump administration scraps its voter-fraud commission

The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity raised alarm bells when its vice chair Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state, sent a letter to all 50 states asking for sensitive information on all registered voters. One lawsuit was filed by a Democratic member of the commission, Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, who said he was left out of the loop on the commission's deliberations.

State officials expressed concerns about the privacy of the data the commission requested, which included names, partial Social Security numbers, voting histories and people's party affiliations.

The Department of Homeland Security will reportedly assume the functions of the commission.

Despite the closure, Trump repeated his claim that there is "substantial evidence of voter fraud".

Of course, proving election fraud was never the end goal for Kobach, who has put in place in Kansas the most restrictive voter registration and identification laws in the country.

Secretary of State Jon Husted has said voter fraud does exist in OH, but it's rare.

In January 2017, one week into Trump's presidency, Trump tweeted that at least 3 million illegal votes had been cast in the 2016 election, citing an unverified claim by the app VoteStand.

When Trump tweeted Thursday morning about the need to push hard for voter identification, Grimes responded by calling Trump "either delusional or intentionally lying about voter fraud". "Too many states have used voter fraud as a justification for laws that keep eligible voters from making their voice heard at the polls". Several states refused to provide the commission with requested voter information, which prevented it from performing its job. Instead of addressing real problems like Russian hacking and solutions that improve security and accessibility, the commission was always a partisan vehicle to justify President Trump's baseless lies about why he lost the popular vote. "The sham commission was a political ploy to provide cover for the president's wild and unfounded claims of mass voter fraud, and to lay the foundation to purge eligible voters from the rolls", she alleged. Secretary of State for Mississippi, Delbert Hosemann, a Republican, asked the commission to "fall in the gulf" in response to its July request for voter information.

"It was a very clean election, " said Galvin, whose office oversees elections statewide.

At least 44 states, including deep Red states such as MS, refused to hand over voter information to Trump's voter fraud panel.
