Trump admin resumes accepting DACA renewals after court order

The federal government, citing a recent court order, said Saturday that it is again accepting requests for grants of deferred action under the DACA, or "dreamers", program, which has protected thousands of young people from deportation.

In his order on Tuesday, Alsup said that the Trump administration's move to rescind DACA was done without following the proper legal procedures, and that the federal government would have to "maintain the DACA program on a nationwide basis" while legal challenges play out in court. No new applications will be accepted.

Pratheepan Gulasekaram, a professor at Santa Clara University School of Law, said that while the announcement was welcome news for DACA recipients, much uncertainty remains.

Former President Barack Obama enacted DACA to keep the undocumented immigrants, known as dreamers, from being deported.

The president reiterated that he wants a merit-based immigration system.

More: What is DACA and who qualified? The program lets residents who were brought to the country illegally as children apply to live and work in the United States.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge William Alsup says the Trump administration must continue to accept DACA renewal applications, despite the president's decision in September to end new and renewal applications and let the program expire on March 5.

Salinas she can't take a permanent teaching position because her work permit would expire in the middle of next year. As of September, about 700,000 people are now protected under the program.

"If you previously received DACA and your DACA expired on or after September 5, 2016, you may still file your DACA request as a renewal request", the agency said on its website.

Trump promised to end the program during the presidental campaign, and in announcing it was being phased out, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called it an unconstitutional circumvention of Congress.
