Donald Trump attacks Pakistan claiming 'they have given us nothing but lies and deceit' in return for $33bn aid

The tough message from the U.S. came after an angry tweet from President Donald Trump on New Year's day that America had been rewarded with "nothing but lies and deceit" by Pakistan in return for its over United States dollars 33 billion aid in the last 15 years.

Trump in his tweet said the us had given Pakistan USD33 billion in the last 15 years, yet Afghanistan and the USA have long accused Pakistan of providing safe havens for militants. "Pakistan has played a double game for years", Haley told reporters.

The public anger in Pakistan was provoked by Trump's recent Twitter post, in which he accused Pakistan of harboring terrorist havens and threatened to cut aid to the South Asian country.

Pakistan's foreign minister referred to his country's cooperation in helping the US find terrorists and war criminals and dispatching them to the prison established by then US President George W Bush's administration during its "war on terror", an global military campaign to hunt down "a radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them".

But Pakistan's defense minister responded on Twitter by saying the USA has "given us nothing but invective & mistrust". In fact, he said that Trump could hire a USA auditor to come to Pakistan and calculate just how much had been given in aid over the past decade and a half.

Speaking about the US' decision to withhold United States dollars 255 million military aid to Pakistan, Nauert said the decision was taken in August and Pakistan would need to "earn" such assistance through honest action.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a series of tweets said that the United States was no longer interested in defeating terrorism.

Tuesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi summoned a National Security Committee meeting with his most ministers senior ministers to respond to the tweets.

Trump's administration had been threatening to keep the $255 million over Pakistan's alleged ties to the Haqqani network, known associates of the Afghan Taliban, since August.

Pakistan has made huge efforts and sacrifices to fight terrorism and is making a very outstanding contribution to the world cause against that scourge, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang told a news conference on Tuesday.

How much of an impact the move would have is not clear, with one expert warning that it could be ineffective and a former Pakistani diplomat telling The National it doesn't go far enough.

Imran stressed that the United States president was not aware of the realities in Afghanistan and the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan.

Mr Trump's harsh words drew praise from Pakistan's old foe, India, and neighbouring Afghanistan, but long-time ally China defended Pakistan's record of combating terrorism.

Foreign Minister Asif dismissed Trump's comments as a political stunt born out of frustration over USA failures in Afghanistan, where Afghan Taliban militants have been gaining territory and carrying out major attacks. Gen. Asif Ghafoor said Pakistan's response will be in line with the wishes of the Pakistani people.
