US could 'conceivably' rejoin Paris climate agreement

Speaking to a room full of reporters alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump was reminded of Norway's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement - which he famously called a "bad deal for America" and led him to withdraw the United States from the Agreement back in June of 2017 - and asked "What could persuade you to remain?"

The Paris agreement was created within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and has been ratified by 170 countries out of the 197 parties to the convention. Seated in the Oval Office, Trump notes that Norway has been a strong consumer of US -built military equipment, including the F-35 aircraft. It made it very hard for us to deal in terms of business. French President Emmanuel Macron in December past year said he was hopeful the U.S. would return to the accord.Commenting on the treaty, Trump said the accord would have taken away the US' "competitive edge".

According to some estimates, the USA would have had to close businesses in order to qualify by 2025.

He added: "So we can conceivably go back in". Trump also said he wished the U.S. could use hydropower."One of the great assets of Norway is a thing called water", he said. "Im not going to let that happen", Trump asserted.

Norway's head Solberg countered Trump's claim by noting that "there are business opportunities" posed by the Paris accord.

A full USA pullout could jeopardise global efforts to limit average warming to under 2 deg C over pre-Industrial Revolution levels.

Norway's power sector is nearly carbon neutral, with hydropower covering roughly 95% of domestic power generation, even though it is home to the biggest hydrocarbon reserves in Europe and the fifth-largest exporter of crude oil in the world.

Notably, Trump lauded Norway's hydropower prowess.

"Norway is a great customer, and a great ally and a great friend", Trump says. In fact most of your energy or your electricity is produced by hydro.

"I wish we'd do some of that", he remarked-possibly uninformed that the USA, too, harbors sizable hydropower resources, which produced 267.8 TWh, or about 7% of the nation's total generation, in 2016.
