US House approves controversial foreign surveillance programme

The provisions of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act carried the chamber by a vote of 256 to 164.

The FISA provision in question is a key tool used by the us intelligence community to conduct foreign surveillance within the U.S.

But since Edward Snowden's leaks in 2013 revealed the extent of warrantless digital monitoring, critics have argued that the spy agencies too frequently take advantage of a loophole in the law, sweeping up Americans' communications while monitoring people overseas, then holding on to the data in case it's ever useful. A proposed amendment to Section 702 to require authorities to obtain court warrants failed 233-183 with support from libertarians and privacy advocates.

The House passed a bill Thursday reauthorizing a controversial National Security Agency (NSA) authority to conduct warrantless surveillance against foreign suspects outside of the U.S. Vega followed up by asking what Trump meant about how his 2016 campaign was "so badly surveilled and abused" under FISA during the election.

Republicans seemed undeterred by Democrats' demands, going ahead with planned votes on the bill and a sole amendment to it on Thursday.

Amid doubts about President Donald Trump's opinions on the issue, Congress passed legislation on Thursday granting his administration continued use of a controversial governmental spying program - and that has many people anxious.

Pressed repeatedly on the matter, Sanders insisted there was no confusion at the White House - or even on Capitol Hill - about the President's position.

President Trump told a bipartisan group of lawmakers to keep working on an immigration after a group of senators thought they had one done.

But House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, had to make a floor speech to address the freshly muddled issue.

She also slammed NBC News reporter Hallie Jackson for a "completely ridiculous" premise in her question asserting the tweets were confusing. That is the oath that the president and his Republican allies reject.

"FISA is something the President should have known about long before he turned on Fox this morning", Sen.

Mr. Trump's first tweet on the topic appeared to encourage lawmakers to support limiting the law.

The passing controversy over Trump's FISA tweet is a case in point. "However, we still think we can get there".

President Donald Trump had an interesting day on Twitter.

Mnuchin, himself a wealthy former Wall Street executive, was pressed on the matter because Trump ran on an "America first" agenda while slamming the effects of globalization on the USA economy.

In addition, leaked transcripts of comments by Trump aides - unmasked under procedures that Coats sought to limit with his guidance on Thursday - lead to a series of unverified media reports of collusion between Trump associates and Russian intelligence.

Both Republicans and Democrats have pushed back against linking the controversy over unmasking to the FISA program. This law is used to spy on the emails, text messages, and other electronic communications of Americans and foreigners without a warrant. Trump criticized the program and suggested it played a role in the surveillance of officials on his presidential campaign after the point was made on "Fox and Friends". "Actually, today's vote was about retaining the power to spy on Americans without a warrant", the American Civil Liberties Union tweeted.
