Wi-Fi Alliance Announces WPA3 To Significantly Boost Wireless Security And Privacy

The Wi-Fi Alliance - an industry group that counts Apple, Cisco, Intel, Microsoft, and Qualcomm among its many members - said it intends to keep hammering away at WPA2, even as it rolls out the protocol's successor. Wi-Fi Alliance is launching configuration, authentication, and encryption enhancements across its portfolio to ensure Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices continue to implement state of the art security protections.

What's really important here is that the Wi-Fi alliance announced its next generation WPA3 security protocol.

Apparently WPA3 will contain four new capabilities for personal and enterprise Wi-Fi networks.

The launch of WPA3, announced in Las Vegas in conjunction with the CES consumer electronics show, follows last year's disclosure of an attack called KRACK that affected devices using the protocol's previous version, WPA2.

The step forward came today when the WiFi Alliance, the organization that decides WiFi standards, published the first details about the upcoming WPA3 WiFi protocol. Recently, it was found vulnerable to KRACK that allows attackers to intercept and decrypt Wi-Fi traffic passing between computers and access points.

You'll also see safeguards even when people have awful passwords, and a simplified security process for devices that have either a tiny display or none at all (say, wearable devices or smart home gadgets). Advanced Wi-Fi applications will rely on WPA2 with Protected Management Frames, broadly adopted in the current generation of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices, to maintain the resiliency of mission-critical networks. Brute-force attacks try different passwords, often by using dictionaries of common passwords, to get into the system.

According to numbers from ABI Research, cumulative Wi-Fi shipments are expected to hit 20 billion devices this year, with 3 billion new Wi-Fi devices to be shipped in 2018.

The Wi-Fi Alliance said that it will continue to license devices using WPA2 for the time being, as the flaw could also be fixed in software. With WPA3, other devices such as phones and tablets can be used to configure your smart home products.

And lastly, a 192-bit security suite, aligned with the Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite from the Committee on National Security Systems, will protect Wi-Fi networks like those of government, defence organisations and industrial set-ups which have higher security requirements.
