Colombian-born soccer star Yerry Mina is making a change from Palmeiras, accepting a five-and-a-half-year contract to join the illustrious ranks of FC Barcelona for the sum of €11.8 million (US$14.2 million). FC's Sid Lowe reveals the three people he feels are most responsible for leading Barcelona to a nine-point lead in La Liga.

Barcelona has not yet announced the agenda of the events in which Yerry Mina will participate.

Barça see great "potential" in Mina and in their welcome statement the club speak highly of the "physical presence" and "aerial prowess" they expect the player to bring to the defensive unit.

Barcelona had a deal with Palmeiras to bring him in the middle of the year for about 9 million euros ($10.7 million), but agreed to pay extra and advance the deal because of the recent injury to France worldwide Samuel Umtiti.

Barcelona have signed Colombian centre-back Yerry Mina from Palmeiras.

Mina arrives to provide competition for Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique and Thomas Vermaelen in defence. He often makes runs forward and is unsafe in the box thanks to his vertical reach.

Mina, who started as a goalkeeper as a youngster, was a key part for Palmeiras as it won the Brazilian league in 2016 and was runner-up past year. He has won a Torneo Finalización (2014), a Colombian Superliga (2015) and a Copa Sudamericana (2015), with Santa Fe, as well as a Serie A with Palmeiras (2016).

To put Yerry Mina's release clause into context, Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann is available for purchase this summer for 100 million euros.

Mina is set to play in his first World Cup in Russian Federation this year. The teams drew 1-1 in the first leg last week in Vigo.
