At least 19 killed as bus topples over

At least 18 people have been killed after a double-decker bus crash in a Hong Kong.

It is understood 40 people were injured.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, she said.

The bus number 872 flipped and hit a lamppost before it came to a stop on its left side on a road near Tai Po in the New Territories at around 6.30 p.m., TVB reported. The Apple Daily quoted some passengers as saying the agitated driver was speeding and driving carelessly after he was accused of being 10 minutes late for his shift.

One elderly man interviewed on television said the driver had been going extremely fast at the time of the accident, even taking bends at high speed.

The bus was headed to Tai Po from Sha Tin Racecourse.

Images of the scene showed the passenger bus lying on its side, with the top of the bus appearing to have been ripped off.

Local TV channels broadcast footage of rescue workers cutting open the roof of the bus, operated by the Kowloon Motor Bus Co., and bodies of dead passengers laid out on the ground, covered in white sheets.

The accident is one of the worst since 2003, when 21 people were killed as a double-decker plunged off a Tuen Mun flyover after colliding with a container truck.

Earlier reports said that 19 people were killed.
