The Polar Plunge events raise money for Special Olympics Michigan.

This year, more than 60 people participated.

"It's just a great cause and we love this", said participant Rob Poirier.

Saturday's plunge was supported by the Wertz Warriors and was one of 28 plunges in the state.

Funds are raised for over 23,000 athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan, a year-round program offering sports for those with intellectual disabilities.

Starfire Piercing Studio is one of several groups that took to the water during the 2018 Polar Plunge. "It's nice to give back to the Special Olympics athletes and work with them because we can learn so much from them that we usually take for granted".

This event started with a parade, where everyone could show off their plunging costumes.

To have the privilege of jumping into the water, each participant had to raise a minimum of $50 for Special Olympics Oregon.

The event was coordinated by Special Olympics Arkansas and the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

More plunges are set to take place in northern MI throughout the rest of the month.
