'House of Cards' Star Reg E. Cathey Dead at 59

Cathey appeared as Freeze in 1994's The Mask, based on the Dark Horse Comics series, and as Dr. Santiago in 1995's Se7en. According to TMZ Cathy succumbed to a battle with lung cancer. Friends and family were at his bedside. On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking.

He studied theatre at the University of MI and the Yale School of Drama.

But he also earned plenty of raves on House of Cards as rib maestro Freddy Hayes, whose BBQ restaurant served as refuge for Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood. He won an Emmy for that role in 2015.

Following the news of actor Reg E. Cathey's death on Friday, Hollywood has been quick to respond on Twitter to share condolences and fond memories. It was Cathey's second of three nominations for the role, and the only Emmy win a House of Cards cast member has taken home thus far. He guest starred on numerous television shows, playing Norman Wilson in seasons four and five of "The Wire" as well as in "Grimm", "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", "House of Cards", and drama "Outcast". Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas and a fountain of talent.

The death of the actor, known for his deep gravely voice, was reported by the show's creater David Simon. Loved by everyone lucky enough know him and work with him.

More recent work by Cathey includes the 2018 film Tyrel, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and as Zakariyya Lacks in the 2017 HBO television movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
