Chris Mazdzer Slides Into History As First US Man To Medal In Singles Luge

Mazdzer won silver in the men's singles luge - becoming the first American to medal in the event. Erin Hamlin, the USA flag bearer at Friday's Opening Ceremonies, won bronze four years ago in Sochi. You can see the full results here.

Mazdzer competed in the past two Winter Games and placed 13th both times. In fifth place after Run 1, he had the second fastest run of all competitors on Run 2 to jump into fourth place - and he was only 0.001 second behind Roman Repilov, an Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation. Mazdzer also broke the course record to move into second place.

Mazdzer then unleashed a third-round run of 47.534, the finest time of the entire competition to date, that vaulted him into second place, just behind Felix Loch's 2:22.259.

On the fourth and final run, Loch did what he had never done before in the Olympic Games - he had a disastrous run. "I'm gonna go up there with the same mentality", Mazdzer told NBC's Lewis Johnson after his third run, "Have fun and throw down". Mazdzer bounced the sled in exultation after his finish, knowing he'd finished a pristine run.

He finished in fourth place after two runs, finishing one one-thousandth outside of the top contenders. Tucker West finished 26th and Taylor Morris finished 18th.

"Hi everyone this is United States luge racer Chris Mazdzer ok bye", Buzzfeed reporter David Muck brought Mazbdzer's good looks to the internet's attention on Saturday.

But he dropped out of the medals to gift American Chris Mazdzer the silver and German Johannes Ludwig the bronze.
