She sadly died. It was a student night.

Police are investigating whether a barrier played a role in the death of a 20-year-old student who reportedly died from a head injury last night.

The 20-year-old female died in the vicinity of Missoula nightclub in Durham, following an incident at around 11:55pm on Wednesday 7, February.

Missoula holds what it claims is Durham's biggest student night on Wednesdays. It is believed several people also fell over after being pushed and ended up falling on top of one another.

The deadly incident occurred at a popular night club, when a metal barrier collapsed under students during the massively popular drinking event.

"There were too many people and he couldn't get them off her". "We were in the queue round the back of Missoula - the queue for queue jump - waiting to go in and a large group of boys come to get in the queue and for some reason decide they are going to go in faster if we push".

Other witnesses have described scenes of panic with some accusing revellers of "barging to get in" the club in Walkergate area of the city.

"The girl was trapped under the fence and crushed".

A witness told the Northern Echo the barrier fell as people were moving in a queue to get in the bar.

Paramedics and fellow students fought to save her life outside the nightclub, administering CPR and attempting to stem heavy bleeding.

"She had lost consciousness and he started to give CPR and was helped by other doormen until the ambulance arrived".

"Our thoughts are with the student's family and friends at this very hard time".

A spokesman for the club said: "A full investigation has been launched, working with the Police and the company who provide our door staff, to fully understand what led to this bad accident".

Although the full details of the incident are yet to emerge, the North East Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to reports of a head injury at around 11.55pm.

"Until that is concluded we are unable to comment further".

A spokeswoman added: 'Our thoughts are with the young lady's family and friends'.
