Emotional Support Dog Bit Child's Face on Flight

Currently, Southwest allows trained assistance and emotional-support animals on its flights, "subject to compliance with certain safety and documentation requirements". Todd Rice said the girl went across the aisle to pet the dog, which bit the girl across the forehead. He says the dog's proprietor was expelled from the flight from Phoenix to Portland and didn't contend the choice.

"The dog and its owner remained in Phoenix as the aircraft departed approximately 20 minutes behind schedule".

Rice said the passenger with the dog didn't fight the decision to be removed. Portage says the dog's teeth "scratched" the kids's temple, breaking the skin.

"As always, the safety of our customers is our highest priority".

Trained emotional support animals are allowed on Southwest domestic and worldwide flights as long as their handlers provide documents (these could include health certificates, vaccinations or permits) required by the laws and regulations at the destination.

The incident comes as two major airlines have changed their policies in response to an uptick in the number of reports involving animals on commercial flights. According to its website, this means that the animals may be subject to "health certificates, permits and vaccinations".

Unlike service animals such as guide dogs, support animals need no training. Despite the dog's owner asking her to stay back, the girl approached the emotional support animal.

"The rise in serious incidents involving animals in flight leads us to believe that the lack of regulation in both health and training screening for these animals is creating unsafe conditions across USA air travel", John Laughter, Delta's senior vice president, said in a statement. There is no charge for service and support animals..

Emotional support animals are becoming increasingly common on flights, with an estimated 100,000 travelling in cabins in the United States every year.
