Lake County reports 7 flu-related deaths this season

"Unfortunately, our latest tracking data indicate that the flu activity is still high and widespread across most of the nation and increasing overall", Schuchat said.

There were 876 new cases of influenza in ME, a 63-percent increase over the previous week, as well as 120 new hospitalizations and five deaths attributed to the flu.

Since October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recorded more than 14,000 people hospitalized nationally with influenza and 53 pediatric deaths.

Last week the statewide roundup had almost 10,000 new cases and 18 deaths. It indicates that there has been one influenza-associated pediatric death in NY so far this season. What is unusual is the hospitalizations are greater than we've been seeing in the past several years.

County officials said since September 2017, more than 9,000 Hays County residents have visited a health care provider with flu-like symptoms and nearly 2,500 of those cases had a positive flu test.

Because of the severity of this flu season, doctors have been sharing their knowledge and expertise on how to prevent colds and the flu. The outbreak has taken a toll on nursing homes and assisted living facilities and recently has led to overcrowded emergency rooms. "That is why it's important that people continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventive measures". "And if one person has the flu there's chances that that virus could be spread to another member of the family". Symptoms of the flu can range from a runny nose, cough, sore throat, body aches, fever, fatigue and in some cases vomiting as well as diarrhea. However, influenza is not always listed as a cause on a death certificate. It is also estimated that 5 to 20 percent of people in Pennsylvania get the flu each year and 120 to 2,000 will die from flu-related complications.

The CDC also reported an increase in the percentage of patients who visited healthcare providers complaining of flu symptoms, up to 7.1 percent from 6.5 percent the previous week.

The County Health Department offers walk-in flu clinics at the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic, 70 Bunner St., Oswego, weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.
