President Donald Trump says it appears the suspect in Florida's deadly school shooting was "mentally disturbed".

Pacific time, comes a day after a former student opened fire at the Parkland, Florida, high school with an AR-15 rifle, killing 17 people and injuring 14 more.

It's unclear where Cruz was living before Wednesday's shooting that took the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Trump says Wednesday's mass shooting turned a Florida school into a "scene of bad violence, hatred and evil". "Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!"

Governor Rick Scott said leaders will be addressing school safety and resources about how to make sure every student and person inside a school building is safe.

On Wednesday afternoon, a gunman, wearing a gas mask, opened fire on students at a Parkland high school in Florida.

At least one student recognized Cruz from an Instagram photo in which he posed with a gun in front of his face, according to CBS News.

A janitor is being hailed as a hero for diverting terrified students away from the teen who carried out one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history.

Students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School reported hearing "what sounded like gunfire" shortly before the end of the school day on Wednesday. School officials reportedly identified Cruz as a potential threat who had demonstrated a fixation on guns. "He was going class to class just shooting at random kids", he said.

Cruz is believed to have concealed himself among the students as they fled the school, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Two others died of their injuries in local hospitals.

Suspect Nikolas Cruz, 19, arrived at the Broward County Jail early Thursday morning after investigators questioned him for hours. The president was silent on the issue of gun control.

He was taken to a nearby hospital before being released into police custody.

School remains closed for the remainder of the week, but school counselors will be on site for students and faculty as investigation continues.
