House GOP works to avert shutdown

Conservatives Line Up Against McConnell-Schumer Spending Deal

The White House is praising a Senate budget agreement, saying it meets the administration's priorities on defense spending and providing a two-year budget plan.

The defense-first strategy from Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was created to win over support from conservative hard-liners and defense hawks in the House GOP conference who were threatening to oppose the stopgap bill - the fifth temporary funding patch since September. The deal would also end - at least for a while - the prolonged congressional cycle of fiscal standoffs and short-term spending patches.

Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), the leader of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, said he opposes the emerging deal, which could be unveiled Wednesday. Republicans have pushed for defense hikes of $80 billion a year and have offered Democrats $60 billion a year for nondefense programs.

The program known as Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals, or DACA, protects immigrants brought into the county unlawfully as children from deportation. The second is to reach a long-stalled deal on immigration before Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opens a promised freewheeling floor debate to try to settle the contentious issue.

Hours before the House vote, the Senate cleared the legislation on a vote of 71 to 28, with wide bipartisan support.

A stopgap bill to keep the U.S. government from another shut down have been approved by the house of representatives on Tuesday.

"If we don't change it let's have a shutdown".

With the House approval and President Donald Trump's expected signature, the government will reopen before many Americans knew it had closed, with a deal that includes about $300 billion in additional funds over two years for military and non-military programmes.

"I think both sides have learned that a government shutdown is bad".

Aspokesman for the libertarian-leaning Paul said the lawmaker is pushing for an amendment to restore the budget caps.

CNN is reporting that if the shutdown is not averted, government agencies will still be able to call their employees in for a half day's work to make the shutdown go smoothly.

"I ran for office because I was very critical of President Obama's trillion-dollar deficits", the Kentucky senator said.

The shutdown gradually ended after Trump signed a bill to end the shutdown after striking a deal with Democrats to hold a debate on the future of over 700,000 young undocumented immigrants, including thousands of Indians.

Negotiators are scrambling to strike a deal as the clock ticks toward the Thursday night deadline to keep the government funded.

"After months of legislative logjams, this budget deal is a genuine breakthrough", Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Sen. Bob Corker announced his opposition to the bill Thursday, calling it a "massive spending agreement".
