The Latest: Uno skates flawlessly to give Japan team lead

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne (Switzerland) has dismissed the appeals of a total of 47 Russian athletes and coaches and they will not participate in the Winter Olympics in PeyongChang.

Erin Hamlin will carry the US flag into Friday's opening ceremony at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Russian Federation was barred from competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics following a doping scandal dating back to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

While announcing the verdict, the CAS said the decision has been taken to balance the IOC's interest in the global fight against doping and the interests of individual athletes from Russian Federation, the CNN reported.

Some observers are concerned Russian Federation got off easily after being banned following allegations of systematic doping at the 2014 Sochi Games.

But the International Olympic Committee still refused them entry saying that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had uncovered further incriminating evidence that CAS had not seen.

Only 169 Russian athletes were cleared for participation on the "OAR" squad in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

"He said the delegation had been told it "could be Canada" but it made a decision to take the matter seriously, sending a note to Canadian team members on expected behaviour at the Games and telling the Russians: "'Hey sorry, if it happens'".

The IOC, however, has refused to invite them, noting there was evidence about the athletes that had not been available to the IOC commission that had investigated them.

"The International Olympic Committee and CAS have been complicit in enabling Russian doping".

Russian Federation has been barred from competing but some athletes who met anti-doping criteria have been allowed to compete.

One hundred and sixty-eight athletes from Russian Federation will take part in the Games for sure, but their quantity may increase.

Six-time gold medalist Ahn is Russia's most decorated short track skater.

IOC President Thomas Bach stated that one needs to reform the CAS.

Athletes from Russian Federation looked a bit muted compared to their fellow Olympians and walked in with an Olympic flag instead of that of their country during the opening ceremony on Friday - but it wasn't because of a fashion statement.

They have the third largest delegation at the Games after the United States and Canada, with 168 athletes. He became a Russian citizen to represent the hosts at the Sochi Games.

Skeleton's Nikitina was stripped of her bronze medal from Sochi 2014.
