West Brom Striker Jay Rodriguez Charged by FA After Racial Abuse Allegation

Cameroon worldwide Bong claimed Rodriguez abused him during West Brom's 2-0 win at The Hawthorns on 13 January.

West Brom say they will "fully support" Jay Rodriguez after the striker was charged by the Football Association over an allegation of racially abusing Brighton defender Gaetan Bong.

Rodriguez, 28, was charged by the FA on Thursday with using "abusive and/or insulting words which included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race" but said he would fight to clear his name.

Rodriguez, though, has denied this and is understood to be upset by the accusation.

Referee Martin Atkinson included the incident in his match report to the FA.

"He has a good mental capacity to deal with things and hopefully he can concentrate on his football when he's here and not worry too much about the situation", he added.

"It is not an ideal situation and until such time as the process is seen through for both players can we get to the bottom".

Rodriguez is "gutted and in disbelief" after the FA charged him following an incident in the game between the two clubs last month.

Rodriguez has denied the allegations but has up until the 16 of February to respond to the charge and West Brom will contest the matter.

Pardew said he is "worried" about Rodriguez who is "upset, angry but OK". I asked him to repeat what he said and I think he realised what he said and tried to limit the damage. This is a serious accusation so he wants to defend it and that's all I really want to say on it.

West Brom say they will "fully support" the England global, who has until February 16 to respond to the FA.
