Comcast CEO Brian Roberts: Olympics protection is like '17 Tremendous Bowls' for the corporate

At the Olympic opening ceremonies Friday, Mr. Pence made no contact with the North Korean political delegation, despite being seated a few metres from Ms. Kim.

"We want to see President Moon become a protagonist in opening a new chapter for reunification and leave great footprints in history", she said.

"But we'll also be there to stand with our allies, and remind the world that North Korea is the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet".

Pence and his wife attended the ceremony with the father of Otto Warmbier, an OH native who died after being held captive in North Korea.

Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un, "courteously" handed over a personal letter from the North Korean leader to Moon during talks on Saturday and also told Moon of her brother's "intention", KCNA said, without elaborating on what that was.

Lee expressed his hopes to the delegation that the "right conditions" would be created for the two heads of state to meet, the official said later. If Moon follows in the footsteps of his predecessors, it would hurt the Trump administration's pressure campaign against the North, according to Ken Gause, director of the International Affairs Group at the Center for Naval Analyses.

Vice President Mike Pence is facing backlash for his staunch efforts to ignore North Korean officials at the Winter Olympic Games, even as the two Koreas continued their temporary truce, marching and competing as one team.

"What can not be overlooked is that Moon did not directly demand North Korea to abandon its nuclear development".

"The South and North shared an understanding that they should continue the positive mood for peace and reconciliation created by the Pyeongchang Olympics and should promote inter-Korean dialogue, exchanges and cooperation", Moon's office said in a statement.

The North's Alpine coach, Pyon Yong Do, says attending the Olympics has a "significant meaning" though winning competitions are important, too.

Dennis Wilder, a Georgetown University assistant professor, who served as National Security Council senior director for East Asian affairs during the George W. Bush administration, suggested Moon should accept the invitation only if Pyongyang agrees to discuss denuclearization with Washington. "Moon should be aware that he has to urge denuclearisation to North Korea by himself, not depending on dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea". The marked development comes after months-long tensions in the region filled with aggressive military manoeuvres, missile launches and nuclear tests. North Korea has said its nuclear weapons are not for bargaining away.

But both sides have held their ground.

Kim Jong-il, Kim's father, had met with two South Korean presidents in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, before his death in 2011: with President Kim Dae-jung in 2000, and with President Roh Moo-hyun in 2007.

The unified hockey team representing North Korea and South Korea didn't fare so well in their first outing, losing 8-0 to Switzerland.
