Korean leader proposes inter-Korean summit with Moon at earliest date possible

N. Korea set to hold military parade on eve of PyeongChang Olympics' opening

A North Korean delegation, led by Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong, arrived at South Korea's presidential residence on Saturday to meet with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in, the Yonhap news agency reported.

A renewed feud over the issue has frayed ties even as America's two key Asian allies confront the challenge of North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

The likelihood of an actual meeting between Pence and North Korean officials seems remote, though the vice president is not ruling it out.

Abe also said, however, that the two leaders had agreed the two countries needed to create a "future-oriented" relationship, which Moon also underscored in opening remarks at their meeting in Pyeongchang, where Abe is to attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The PyeongChang Winter Olympics marks the 10th marching together of the two Koreas under a unified flag at the opening ceremony of an global sports competition.

An inter-Korean summit would be the third of its kind, after Kim's father and predecessor Kim Jong Il met the South's Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun in 2000 and 2007 respectively, both of them in Pyongyang.

Pence has said that he is open to meeting with North Korean officials during his visit.

A White House official said Pence did not interact with Kim Yo Jong or Kim Yong Nam who were seated a row behind the USA vice-president during the opening ceremony.

Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah says Pence visited with guests at several tables at Friday's reception, "but did not come across the North Korean delegation".

"Mr President. North Korea bombing, please", the banner read.

Vice President Pence is greeted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe prior to a meeting at Abe's official residence in Tokyo on Wednesday. "I clearly said so to President Moon", he said.

The vice president was supposed to sit across from the North Korean head of state at the dinner, but reportedly showed up late and was not able to be seated.

Moon is joined by his national security director, intelligence chief, chief of staff and the unification minister.

Kim Yo Jong is the first member of her family to visit South Korea since the 1950-53 Korean War as part of a high-level delegation attending the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The group is fringe, but their demonstrations have generated irate reactions in North Korea's state-run media and could potentially spin out into a major incident if they ever manage to get closer to the North Koreans themselves - or especially Kim and her entourage.
