New Engine Trouble for Pratt & Whitney, Airbus

Pratt & Whitney's new generation PurePower PW1100G geared turbofan (GTF) engines powering the Airbus A320neo family aircraft has ran into new problems.

Technical issues with certain engines of IndiGo's A320neo planes had led to the grounding of many flights past year.

The exact consequences of the Airbus decision are not yet clear, partly because the spare pool of PW1100G may include an unidentified number of engines that need no modification and can therefore be used.

The grounding of aircraft came after a directive from European aviation safety regulator European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). At least four scheduled flights have been cancelled and at least six have been delayed.

A Pratt spokesperson said the issue relates to a "limited sub-population" of PW1100G engines.

According to a statement released by the airline, IndiGo has withdrawn three A320 neo aircraft from service, effectively from February 9, 2018, due to the engine problems.

Indian budget carrier IndiGo, said it had carried out 69 Pratt engines replacements in 18 months, after multiple inflight shut downs and turn backs, adding replacements were the best possible precautionary measure.

According to the filing, IndiGo would continue to add A320 ceo and ATR aircraft to its fleet. "We have three aircraft with the particular engine configuration, which have been flagged by EASA", IndiGo said in a release. Aircraft with one affected engine are restricted from certain extended-range flights.

About 113 Pratt & Whitney engines now equip the A320neo family of aircraft, which are used by 18 customers.

Airbus said in a statement that Pratt is "investigating the root cause of this new finding with the full support of Airbus".

The grounded aircraft are powered by Pratt & Whitney engines.
